Healthgrades recognition received in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Labor and Delivery and Gynecologic Surgery
(WESLACO, TX.)—August 22, 2019– Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco, a member of Prime Healthcare, has been recognized for excellence in delivering newborn babies, caring for women after delivery of their newborn, and performing gynecologic procedures, according to this year’s evaluation from Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.
Knapp Medical Center was one of only a few hospitals in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas to achieve all three of Healthgrades’ “Women’s Care Specialty Excellence Awards”: for Obstetrics and Gynecology, Labor and Delivery, and Gynecologic Surgery. In fact, out of 234 eligible hospitals, Knapp was one of only 12 facilities in the entire state of Texas to receive all three of these awards.
The first achievement, for Obstetrics and Gynecology, recognizes Knapp Medical Center for exceptional clinical outcomes while caring for women during labor and immediately after delivery of their newborn, as well as for women undergoing gynecologic procedures. Knapp was one of only 24 facilities in the state of Texas to receive the Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Award, out of 144 eligible hospitals. Nationwide, Knapp is among the top 10% of all hospitals evaluated for obstetrics and gynecology — for the 5th year in a row (2015-2019).
The second distinction is Healthgrades’ 2019 Labor and Delivery Excellence Award™. Knapp was one of only 32 facilities in the state of Texas to receive the Labor and Delivery Excellence Award, out of 218 eligible hospitals. Nationwide, Knapp is among the top 5% of all hospitals evaluated for exceptional care of mothers during labor and delivery – for two years in a row (2018-2019).
The third award, the 2019 Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award™ from Healthgrades, places Knapp among a select group of hospitals for providing outstanding quality outcomes in gynecologic surgery. Of 160 eligible hospitals, Knapp was one of only 25 facilities in the state of Texas to receive the Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award. Nationwide, Knapp is among the top 10% of all hospitals evaluated for gynecologic surgery — for the 7th year in a row (2013-2019).

The maternity center at Knapp Medical Center enables women and newborn babies in the Mid-Valley to enjoy the beautiful experience of a child’s birth in an attractive and very convenient center which is close to home and the support of their family. The Knapp Women’s Services Department features private rooms with a relaxing décor, including colorful “sky panels” in the ceilings which depict blue skies, clouds, palm trees and other comforting images.
Healthgrades analyzed patient outcomes data for all patients (all-payer data) provided by 15 individual states for years 2015 through 2017. During this time, if all hospitals in the analysis performed similarly to those that received the Healthgrades 2019 Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Award, complications could have potentially been avoided
for 119,203 patients.
Additionally, from 2015 through 2017, patients treated in hospitals receiving the Healthgrades Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Award had, on average, a 33.4% lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Award.
